Doc Guthrie’s

Doc Guthrie’s is a homage to barber shops of the 1950s and a tribute to the grandfather of one of the owners. They offer classic mens cuts, straight-razor shaves and beard trims along with craft beer and whiskey. I worked closely with the owners to develop a vintage inspired identity to complete the experience.

The wordmark is composed of curved lettering inspired by by traditional sign-writing and window signage. The letters were spaced and adjusted to optimise legibility.

The symbol is based on a photo of the shop’s name sake. The artwork was carefully drawn to increase contrast and clarity. The result is a distinctive mark with a vintage feel which can be rendered in a single color or multiple tones.

Logo System

The logo system includes two designs– free-standing and circle. These options ensure that the logo can be seen clearly on dark backgrounds and add flexibility.

The type system is inspired by advertising and packaging from the period. The script font imitates classic sign-writing and is suitable for eye-catching banners or headlines. The sans-serif and typewriter fonts are suited to general copy and continue the vintage theme.

The monotone color palette complements the barber shop interior which features raw wood, subway tiles and stainless steel fixtures and fittings. Pure white and pure black are intentionally avoided in order to produce a softer, gently-aged look.
